decompressive melting

decompressive melting
GLOSSARY OF VOLCANIC TERMS
Melting that occurs when rocks undergo a decrease in pressure. This commonly occurs in the vicinity of hot spots as mantle rocks rise to shallower levels in the earth due to convective rise and upwelling (Sigurdsson, 2000, p. 15). Melting occurs as a result of decreasing pressure, not increasing temperature.
